I have the student download of windows 7 home premium and after downloading and starting installation, it isnt compatible to upgrade from vista home premium. So do I have to burn some sort of dvd for installation, or can i just install from the download i was told to save on my desktop and let it... You can reinstall retail Win7 full version anywhere you want as often as you please as long as it's on only one machine at a time. Even with a mobo change which triggers reactivation it is full retail so it is automatic. The Windows.old folder is created whenever you perform an in-place upgrade, it contains the previous version of Windows. It indicates that at some time in the past your system has been upgraded, most likely when you installed Home Premium over Pro.
